Below is a listing of all items appearing in the ARC Headline News section for the past year.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has released employment projections for the period 2010-2020. The projections are formatted to provide industry staffing patterns (occupations by industry) and industries of employment for occupations, in addition to occupation and industry totals. In each case, employment is estimated for 2010 and projected for 2020. These data are accompanied by a variety of other information included education and training requirements and earnings information. These projections are a major input to the BLS publication Occupational Outlook Handbook, which will be released late in March. The National Crosswalk Service Center is developing a variety of files based on these data in a variety of database formats. Watch for news about these files on the NCSC home page.

The Workforce3 One, a web site sponsored by the Employment and Training Administration, Workforce3 One is an online community designed to improve all parts of the Workforce Development System. Access to nearly all of the resources and webinar recordings is now available without the need to sign into the site. The site includes a number of different communities of practice, including the LMI Win-Win Network, which includes the Analyst Resource Center as one of its key LMI organizations.

President Obama has issued a call-to-action to U.S. business, and in doing so has asked for their help in getting low-income and disconnected youth jobs this summer. The goal is to provide youth with opportunities that will that will help them to develop life skills, work skills, and provide them a way to learn while they earn. The Department of Labor has developed a website that will serve as a resource to employers as well as youth.

BLS recently published a databook filled with statistics about women in the workforce. This resource contains both historical and current information on a variety of characteristics for this demographic.

In order to provide unemployed post 9/11 era veterans with intensive and follow-up employment-related services, the ETA and the Veterans' Employment & Training Service recently unveiled the "Gold Card" initiative. Veterans can print a Gold Card and get information on how to access available services at the One-Stop Career Centers on the DOL website.

The U.S. Census Bureau has released findings from the 2010 American Community Survey (ACS) covering more than 40 topics including such things as educational attainment, income, health insurance coverage, occupation, language spoken at home, nativity, and selected monthly homeowner costs. The data is available in detailed tables for the nation, all 50 states, and a variety of other locations.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has released the seventh edition of its Key Indicators of the Labour Market, an online and downloadable database that compares labor market statistics from countries and regions throughout the world.

Licensure Portability Grants

The Health Resources and Services Administration has announced the availability of two grants of approximately $350,000 each. The intention is to encourage state licensing board to reduce statutory and regulatory barriers to telemedicine. Licensure portability is seen as one element in the panoply of strategies needed to improve access to quality health care services. More information here.

The most up-to-date data and economic news releases from the Department of Laobr can now be viewed using a new mobile application. The free app displays real-time updates. The app currently works on the iPhone and iPod Touch as well as Android phones. Work continues on making this available on BlackBerrys and iPad devices.

In an effort to provide better career information, BLS has modified its system for categorizing job preparation. The new system break out the type of education, training and/or experience needed for specific careers.

Recycling has become an increasingly imporatnt issue in the US as the population and the amount of waste each person generates continues to increase. BLS has provided information on careers in the recycling industry.

The National O*NET Center has placed Version 16.0 of the O*NET Database into production in their online applications, including O*NET Online.

The O*NET Academy has been re-launched with a new look and feel. Check out the site's new content with its simple and easy navigation. You will find self-paced courses, tutorials, podcasts and other tools to help you to get the most from the variety of freely available O*NET products.

O*NET has updated its listing of green references. The newly released guide includes information about ongoing green activities such as data collection on occupational and worker requirements for gren jobs, and an updated task list for green occupations. The U.S. Department of Labor has issued a Training and Employment Guidance Letter (4-11) which provides Workforce Information (WI) and Labor Market Information (LMI) Formula and special information services to state and local workforce investment boards (WIBs), One-Stop Career Centers, businesses, and the job-seeking public. The guidance notes that states need to provide sound foundational data, information, and resources to workforce system staff and job seekers so that these customers can make informed decisions about the services, training, and career decisions that lead to good jobs. States should also provide actionable information and sound research to state and local policy makers to support the development of data-driven policies and program designs.

The CareerOneStop system has added a scholarship search that contains over 5,000 sources of financial aid for students. The online application allows visitors to search by geographic or program area.

The Department of Labor has started a project that is aimed at making it easier for developers to access and use data generated by the department and incorporate it into their web-based applications. They've developed application program interfaces (APIs) for nine datasets, ranging from DOL Frequently Asked Questions to the 2010 Occupational Employment Statistics dataset. They also provide Software Development Kits (SDKs) for BlackBerry, Android and iOS devices.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Outlook Handbook has long been one of the most popular sources of information about jobs and careers. Both the printed and online versions include occupation descriptions, outlook, sources of training, wages and more. They've redesigned the online version and offer a preview of the new look.

The Employment and Training Administration has developed a web page and documents that contain links to all published state and local employment projections. They include links to both long-term and short-term as well as industry and occupation projections.

The U.S. Department of Labor has launched its first application for smartphones, a timesheet to help employees independently track the hours they work and determine the wages they are owed. This free application is currently compatible with the iPhone and iPod Touch. Similar applications for other smartphones may be coming soon.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics and the National Center for Education Statistics have created crosswalk resources that link the agencies' major classification systems, the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) and Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP). These files are the final three items in the Download section of the CIP 2010 Resource Page.

The mySkills myFuture web site allows users to explore careers that may be similar to work they've done in the past and for local job openings. Recent updates allow visitors to find local employers and personalize their search options, with such options as avoiding public speaking or outdoor work. Once you've entered a job title on the front page and found your career matches, check out the Narrow Your Results and Find Businesses links.

With the release of O*NET 15.1, for the first time, the O*NET database is available as SQL files for use in Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and Oracle; and also as tab-delimited text files. Learn more and download this database from the O*NET Center Developer Corner.

The O*NET 15.1 Database is a special release that incorporates the new O*NET-SOC 2010 taxonomy, including new O*NET-SOC codes, titles, and descriptions. This database can help developers, researchers, and programs make a rapid transition to a 2010 SOC-based system.

The Census Bureau has begun release of state files required for redistricting within states. Each state's files include five simple tables containing total population counts, counts by race and ethnicity and housing unit status. The Census Bureau's Redistricting Data page contains a list of the states for which the files have been released and other information. Distribution of the files began in early February and will conclude by March 31.

For over 35 years the Association of Public Data Users has provided a means for communication among users, producers and distributors of government statistical data. The Groups Resources page provides a variety of information of interest to anyone who falls into one of those groups interested in government data.
